Arrowood 2000 Saralee's Vineyard Viognier Sonoma
Valley, California
On the nose, this Viognier from Saralee’s
Vineyard has a delicate perfume of honeysuckle,
orange blossom, and even a hint of orange sherbet
with vanilla ice cream. On the palate, the full-bodied
flavors are incredibly concentrated and luscious
with creamy vanilla, dried apricots and subtle notes
of spice in the background. There is a silky, viscous
texture in the mouth and a lingering finish complemented
by a touch of vanilla.
Chef's Suggestions: Our Viognier will compliment
poultry or seafood seasoned with tarragon, basil,
fennel or even Cajun spices. It makes a delicious
addition to most Thai dishes, and is wonderful with
a simple, seared pepper crusted tuna steak.
The exotic Viognier grape of the Rhone Valley
is the source of the legendary wines of Condrieu and
Chateau Grillet. Our Viognier vines are planted in
extremely well-drained soils, stressing the vines
to produce concentrated varietal character —
most often described as floral, aromatic and spicy.
We capture this delicate varietal character by handling
the fruit very gently, with a light press and a long,
cold fermentation.
We choose not to age this wine in oak in order
to retain all the elegant orange blossom, peach
and apricot flavors. Complex and full-bodied, our
Viognier offers rich peach and nectarine flavors
followed by elegantly spicy, perfumed aromas. Serve
with light salads, fresh pasta dish, or even Chinese
takeout. Also wonderful with Thanksgiving Dinner.
Delas 1998
Condrieu Clos Boucher Viognier Rhône, France
The characteristics of the Delas Frères
Condrieu Clos Boucher are representative of the
Condrieu appellation. The wine is powerful, developing
some exotic fruit aromas, as well as those of apricot
and peach. Due to an alcoholic and malolactic fermentation
in wooden vats, the cru is exceptionally complex
and full-bodied.
For the Hogue Genesis
Viognier, the moment the grapes were crushed it
was clear that the intensely aromatic fruit was
going to make a memorable wine. The Andrews Vineyard
Viognier vines that make up 86% of the wine were
only four years old, so the berries were small
and the yield was low. The result? Extremely concentrated
varietal flavors and character in the finished
wine.
This wine has intense apricot, vanilla and orange
blossom aromas with hints of mint, cinnamon, honey
and fresh baked bread. On the palate the rich
apricot and floral flavors echo the aromas, followed
by a viscous mouthfeel and a lingering nectarine
finish.
This is a decadent wine to pair with seared foie
gras with caramelized apples or duck in orange
and ginger sauce.
