Arrowood 1999
Sonoma Valley Syrah Sonoma Valley, California
This debut wine makes a great first impression. Bold
aromas of sweet, ripe fruit, assertive flavors anise
and ground coffee commingle with plump, ripe tannins
and pronounced oak. In the mouth, a nicely sculpted,
textural quality is followed by a long, lengthy finish.
Australian
Domaine Wines 2000 Sheeraz Limestone Coast Shiraz,
Australia
The fruit for this wine came in beautifully ripe
and black under the crusher at Barossa Vintners
in Tanunda (Barossa Valley) where Ben Glaetzer
has made all of our ‘Sheeraz’ to date.
Our hopes have been very high for this wine since
that time.
Each vintage we add mainly new French and a small
portion of new American Oak to supplement second
and third year oak. This certainly helps bind
and meld the full-on flavours into quite a complex
mouthful. It has a rich extract and a smooth,
fruit sweet centre that is packed with black fruit.
The concentration is fuelled by a healthy 14.5%
alc/vol that sits comfortably within the framework.
We suggest that the Sheeraz is breathed and preferably
decanted to allow it to open up, soften and better
show it’s wild fennel/liquorice and spice
highlights.
Australian
Domaine Wines 2001 Barossa Nova Shiraz
Australia
This release is 100% Barossa Shiraz grown by the
cooperative owners of the Barossa Estates Winery.
This vintage is a blend of fruit from younger and
older vines made in the recognised Nova style of
lifted aromatics with a fruit first palate and minimal
oak. As well as showing fresh, ripe berry and spice/pepper
characters the Barossa Nova Shiraz has lovely hints
of dark stone fruit/cherry. As always it is best
enjoyed over the next two years.
Colour: Lively red with a slight purple hue.
Bouquet: The bouquet displays sweet minted oak
aromas integrated with peppery Barossa Shiraz
fruit characteristics.
Palate: The palate is dominated by rich Barossa
Shiraz fruit flavours. It is full-bodied with
peppery mulberry and well-integrated vanilla
spiciness. This wine has great length with a
soft velvety finish.
Cellaring Potential: This wine will continue
to mature and develop in the bottle for up to
10 years.
Serving Suggestions: The perfect match to old
tasty cheddar from Milawa. It will also complement
venison or a Port Lincoln scotch fillet.
SUpon release d'Arenberg's The Dead Arm Shiraz has
a vivid young deep brick-red colour. The nose shows
intense and complex cedary, fig, blackberry and
blueberry like smells occasionally pepper/spice
smells too. Vanilla mocha oak smells and attacking
blackberry, cassis characters are also evident on
the palate. Full, intense sweet, cedary middle palate
flavours have a distinctly silky, svelte texture
deceptively disguise the rich powerful cassis and
toffee-mocha flavours. The accent is on powerful
full bodied berry fruit flavour, with a little sweet
English toffee like oak evident on the juicy, rolling
finish.
After time in bottle the d'Arenberg's Dead Arm
gains a biscuity, cinnamon, caramel and eucalyptus
based bouquet on top of rich blackberry pie smells.
Tobacco, mushrooms, malt, and earth aromas play
a part on the long, elegant fleshy, chocolate
mint flavours. Restrained tannin and acidity coupled
with rich alcohol, produce a seamless, peppery,
velvety rolling length.
